Why do our liquid soaps come in a plastic pouch? Great question! We made a decision early on that we did not want to sell individual plastic bottles with our soap, as that’s way more plastic for way less soap. We could choose a glass bottle, but these regularly break during shipping and handling, and they really increase the price point a lot for the soap. (Our customers are wonderfully supportive, but we want to make sure our products aren’t out of reach for them, either!) Our best solution was to avoid individual bottles of soap altogether and implement a packaging return program for our liquid soap. This way, you get 3 bottles’ worth of soap at once, contained in less than 1 pump bottle’s worth of plastic. Because let’s be real: if you use liquid soap, you already have a pump you can reuse, right? PLUS, when you’re done with your soap pouch, you can return it to us for a discount on your next purchase! This soap is a handmade liquid soap, done the traditional way! To begin, oils and potash (lye) are added together and vigorously mixed. Over time, saponification (the chemical reaction that makes soap) will happen, and form a very thick soap paste, almost as firm as a bar of soap. Water is then added so that the soap can easily be used in a soap pump. For your safety—to avoid bacteria and fungal growth—we add a preservative. And while our soap is concentrated enough to use without a foaming pump, we don’t add any thickeners like large companies do, so our soap is a bit thinner. To ease the transition if you’re not used to a thinner soap, we recommend the foaming pump. If using a traditional pump, just start slowly when dispensing, as it may come out more quickly than you’re used to!
Ingredients: olive oil, coconut oil, water, potassium hydroxide (potash lye), fragrance, sodium lactate, <0.5% preservative (propylene glycol, diazolidinyl urea, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate).
