Tubby Tabby Soaps Celebrates 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride by Giving Back
Local queer-owned soap business pledges to donate a portion of Pride sales to Kind Space
Ottawa, ON: This month, Tubby Tabby Soaps, an Ottawa-based queer-owned business, has launched a campaign to raise money for Kind Space by selling Pride flag-themed soaps. The company has committed to donating $1 from the sale of each bar of Pride soap, which is available in 8 colourful Pride flag-inspired designs between June and August.
This campaign is the latest in a number of yearly campaigns launched by Tubby Tabby Soaps, all with the goal of supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. “As a queer-owned business, we feel like Pride is very personal. We want to give back,” said Lia Walsh, who started Tubby Tabby Soaps in 2019 with her partner, Eli. “For us, Kind Space is a crucial organization in Ottawa because it offers support to our community in so many ways, and in a non-judgemental environment.”
Kind Space offers a wide variety of services to 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in Ottawa, including educational workshops, community-building events, a food pantry and even access to clothing for people who are transitioning and may not yet own gender-affirming garments.
As the cost of living rises ever higher, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community has relied on organizations like Kind Space more and more. Yet with recent changes in federal funding, grant opportunities are affected at all levels, and as a result, small organizations like Kind Space have been hit hard. “I kept seeing Kind Space posting calls for help,” says Walsh, “and it seemed like giving them a little money from our Pride soap sales was the least we could do. And I hope it reminds others of this great organization when they’re considering where to make donations.”
